Langkawi, officially known as Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah (Malay: Langkawi Permata Kedah), is a duty-free island and an archipelago of 99 islands (plus five small islands visible only at low tide in the Strait of Malacca) located some 30 km off the coast of northwestern Malaysia and a few kilometres south of Ko Tarutao, adjacent to the Thai border.

The Langkawi International Airport is located at Padang Matsirat and it is also considered a tourist attraction as the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition takes place every 2 years near the airport. The airport handled almost 1.2 million passengers and over 41,000 aircraft movements in 2008.

The Payar Island Marine Park is situated in the northern part of the Strait of Malacca, 19 nautical miles (35 km) south of Langkawi and encompasses the islands of Payar, Kaca and Lembu (east of Payar) and Segantang (13 kilometres (8.1 mi) west of Payar) which are surrounded by coral reefs.
