Catterick Garrison is a major garrison and military town 3 miles (5 km) south of Richmond, North Yorkshire, England. It is the largest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of around 13,000 in 2017 and covering over 2,400 acres (about 10 km 2 ).
The line was opened in 1915 and extended 4.5 miles (7.2 km) from Catterick Bridge station to a railway station in the middle of the garrison called Camp Centre, climbing steeply in its first 3 miles (5 km) at a gradient of 1-in-50, then 1-in-46.
Catterick (/ ˈ k æ t ər ɪ k /) is a village, civil parish and electoral ward in North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, it is 8.5 miles (13.7 km) north-west of the county town of Northallerton just to the west of the River Swale.
The parish contains the village of Colburn and the surrounding area, including part of Catterick Garrison to the south of the village. Two of the buildings are in the garrison, and the others are to the north of the village, consisting of a former manor house and an associated courthouse and barn, a cottage, and farm buildings.
In 1951, the population of Scotton was 7,655, so it has decreased since due to the decline in military activity in neighbouring Catterick Garrison. Before the development of Catterick Garrison, Scotton was a country estate. Scotton Hall, its park, Scotton Lodge and Scotton Cottage are now surrounded by army barracks. [14]

Catterick Camp railway station was a railway station in North Yorkshire, England. It was built as the terminus of the sub branch of the Eryholme-Richmond branch line to serve Catterick Camp, now Catterick Garrison. Along with the rest of the stations on the branch it was closed in 1964, but the line remained open until December 1969. [1]
It is located alongside the A6055 road on the outskirts of Catterick Village. Although initially a flying station, RAF Catterick was primarily the depot of the RAF Regiment for nearly 50 years. The station closed in 1994 and was transferred to the British Army to become Marne Barracks. Operationally it falls under the command of Catterick Garrison.
