Galaxie 500 was an American indie rock band that formed in 1987 and split up in 1991 after releasing three studio albums: Today (1988), On Fire (1989), and This Is Our Music (1990). [ 4 ] The band membership comprised guitarist and vocalist Dean Wareham , drummer Damon Krukowski , and bassist and vocalist Naomi Yang .
The band's name comes from a Ford car of the 1960s, the Ford Galaxie 500. Galaxie 500's records were released in the US and UK on the independent Rough Trade label and went out of print upon Rough Trade's demise. Galaxie 500's entire catalog, along with a box set including singles, EPs and rarities was reissued during the 1990s by Rykodisc.
The Rolling Stone Album Guide called it Galaxie 500's "best album by far". [6] In 2002, Pitchfork placed it at number 16 on its "Top 100 Albums of the 1980s" list. [18] In 2013, Fact placed it at number 51 on its "100 Best Albums of the 1980s" list. [19] In 2018, Pitchfork ranked it fourth on its "The 30 Best Dream Pop Albums" list. [4]
Naomi Yang (born September 15, 1964) is an American musician, graphic designer, photographer and filmmaker. She was a member of the dream pop band Galaxie 500, psychedelic rock band Magic Hour and is half of the psychedelic folk duo Damon & Naomi.
During 2004, Damon had a book of poetry published (The Memory Theater Burned) and the duo also worked on pulling together a double DVD of Galaxie 500 videos that was released by Plexifilm.
