Iowa 44 was created on January 1, 1969, when the Iowa State Highway Commission reorganized the state's primary highway system. Iowa 44 was one of 26 state highways to receive a new route number. [3] Prior to 1969, what is now Iowa 44 was part of two highways, Iowa 64 and Iowa 39. [4] Since its designation, the route has undergone few changes.
It continues north for 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 miles (13.7 km) to the Whittemore area, where there is a one-mile (1.6 km) overlap with U.S. Route 18, where it fully enters Kossuth County. It goes north 9 miles (14 km) to Fenton , continues north for 6 miles (9.7 km), and then turns west for 3 miles (4.8 km), where it enters Emmet County .
Iowa Highway 130 was designated in 1969, along a section of Iowa Highway 150. [2] Until the mid-1970s, Highway 130 extended to US 61 / US 67 along the Davenport riverfront. By the 1980s, a portion of Harrison and Brady Streets had become one-way streets, joining near Vander Veer Park, leading to Iowa 130 to be truncated at the park. [3]
The previous route through Cedar Rapids was renamed US 151 Business (though the official state designation for it is Iowa 922). Finally, in 1989, US 151 was extended to its current southern end at exit 225 along I-80. This extension followed the old route of Iowa 149. As a result, US 151 became the main route through the Amana Colonies.
