Lion taming is the taming and training of lions, either for protection or for use in entertainment, such as the circus. Ellen Chapman later Ellen Sanger appearing as Madame Pauline de Vere (1831 – 30 April 1899) was a British circus performer and lion tamer. She was said to be the first woman to put her head in a lion's jaws and a demonstration impressed Queen Victoria.
The high point of her act was carrying her ten-year-old, 159-kilogram (351 lb) lion Sicchi on her back and shoulders. [3] In 1907, a nervous Heliot was attacked by her lions and severely injured while performing at the Circus Orlando in Copenhagen ; she was rescued by three attendants. [ 5 ]
