The foundation stone was laid by the Earl of Egremont on 16 March 1826, and the hospital was opened as the Sussex County Hospital on 11 June 1828. Construction of the new hospital started in July 2004 and cost £36 million. The new building opened in June 2007, and the Dyke Road site was officially closed on 22 June 2007.
