The Arsenal was established by the U.S. Army Ordnance Department near Pittsburgh in 1814. It was situated on 30 acres (12 ha) of land bordering the Allegheny River in the community of Lawrenceville.
The eastern terminus is at PA 287 in Lawrenceville less than 300 yards (270 m) south of the New York border. PA 49 serves as North Street, North Main Street, and Northern Potter Road in Ulysses, as Cowanesque Street in Lawrenceville, and as both East and West Main Street for Harrison Valley, Westfield, Knoxville, and Elkland.
