In 1986, the first burn unit was started in the country with six beds by country's first plastic surgeon Prof. Dr. Mohammad Shahidullah in Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The number of beds was increased to 50 in 2003 under supervision of Dr. Samanta Lal Sen. [4] Later, bed number was increased to 100.

The 50-bed organization was called the Institute of Mental Health and Research. In 1993, the address of the institute was changed and it was brought to Dhaka Medical College. On 19 October 1992, the facility was relocated to its current building at its current address and renamed this 100-bed facility. [3]
