"Barcelona" is a single released by Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury and operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé. A part of their collaborative album Barcelona, it also appeared on Queen's Greatest Hits III. The song reflects Mercury's love of opera with his high notes and Caballé's operatic vocals, backed by a full orchestra.
The song's music video is footage of the artists' miming performance at the open air "La Nit" festival in Barcelona on 8 October 1988 (Mercury's last live performance before his illness got worse [3]), where the song was performed along with "Barcelona" and "How Can I Go On". The video was first released as part of a 5" CD video single.
The song was composed and produced by Mike Moran and Freddie Mercury. The recording sessions include violins by Homi Kanga and Laurie Lewis, cello by Deborah Ann Johnston, horn by Barry Castle and percussion by Frank Ricotti. "Barcelona" was chosen to be the anthem of 1992 Olympics in Spain, but Mercury died less than seven months before the games.
