Police Squad! is an American crime comedy television series that was broadcast on the ABC network in 1982. It was created by David Zucker , Jim Abrahams , and Jerry Zucker , starring Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin .
The Naked Gun, also known as Police Squad!, is a media franchise consisting of several American crime spoof-comedies, based on an original story written by the comedy filmmaking trio Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker.
In 1982, ZAZ cast Nielsen in a similar style, in their ABC TV series Police Squad!. The spoof series introduced Nielsen as Lt. Frank Drebin, the stereotypical police officer modeled after serious characters, such as Joe Friday, in earlier police TV dramas.
The character of Frank Drebin was first introduced in the six episodes that were aired of the 1982 Police Squad! series on ABC, starting with the episode "A Substantial Gift (The Broken Promise)." Drebin is a police sergeant with the rank of detective lieutenant and is a member of the Police Squad task force.
Arriving later at the Police Squad crime lab, scientist Ted Olsen shows Frank and Ed the facial hair recovered from the Schultz' crime scene through a microscope (in a parody of a Gillette Atra shaving advertisement of the early 1980s). The hair belongs to Luca Burnett, the man who killed Mike Schultz, and a known associate of Martin.
