The United Kingdom is one of two countries, the other being Thailand, that use diplomatic flags abroad. These special flags are flown at the chanceries of their embassies and consulates. For High Commissions, the Union Flag is used. In addition, there is a flag in use for British consular vessels in international or foreign waters.
Though there are a few technical differences, they are in practice one and the same office. Nigeria first started sending twelve diplomatic personnel overseas to serve in British missions from 1957. Three years later upon independence the country had its own foreign ministry, headed by Foreign Minister Jaja Wachukwu .
The official title is His Britannic Majesty's Ambassador to Georgia. After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the United Kingdom renewed diplomatic relations with Georgia and the then British ambassador to Russia, Sir Brian Fall , was also accredited to Georgia until the new embassy in Tbilisi was opened in 1995.
This is a list of diplomatic missions in the United Kingdom. At present, the capital city of London hosts 167 embassies and high commissions. Several other countries have ambassadors accredited to the United Kingdom, with most being resident in Brussels or Paris. There are also a number of Honorary Consuls resident in various locations in the UK.
The United Kingdom does not maintain a full embassy or High Commission in a number of countries. In each of these cases the head of mission to another country, usually a neighbouring one, is also accredited to the other country (except, at present, for the ambassadors to Haiti and Honduras, who are dedicated but non-resident).
