Dhanushkodi Beach lies on the tip of the Rameswaram island. [1] In this beach, the Bay of Bengal and Gulf of Mannar Sea of Indian Ocean merge which is known as Arichal Munai in Tamil. [2] Before 1964, Dhanushkodi was a busy, crowded city. The Dhanushkodi Beach attracted thousands of tourists each day.
Dhanushkodi is the southernmost tip of the island and houses the Kothandaramaswamy Temple dedicated to Rama. [76] Though Dhanushkodi was washed away during the 1964 cyclone, the temple alone remained intact. It is 18 km (11 mi) way from the centre of the town and can be reached by road.
It traversed coast-to-coast linking Kochi in Kerala with Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu. It crosses the famous Pamban Bridge (Annai Indira Gandhi Bridge) before crossing into Rameswaram island. The total length runs up to 440 km (270 mi). [1]
Pamban Island is situated between 9°11' N and 9°19' N latitude and 79°12' E to 79°23' E longitudes. The chain formed by Pamban Island, the shoals of Adam's Bridge, and Mannar Island of Sri Lanka separate Palk Bay and the Palk Strait in the northeast from the Gulf of Mannar in the southwest.
