The FDA authorized the marketing of 20 Zyn products on Thursday, marking the first allowance for the fast-growing nicotine pouches.
Zyn (stylized in all caps as "ZYN") is a Swedish brand of nicotine pouches. Zyn pouches are designed to be placed between the gums and lip, allowing nicotine to be absorbed into the bloodstream through the soft tissue. They are available in several variants with different nicotine strengths and flavours.
Current FDA guidelines regulating tobacco products do not apply to ZYN, said Dr. Zongshan Duan, an assistant professor at the Georgia State University School of Public Health.
The FDA has previously granted similar authorization to several brands of e-cigarettes, a tobacco-heating device, and snus, a type of pasteurized tobacco that is popular in Scandinavian counties. Unlike snus, Zyn and other nicotine pouches don't contain tobacco, only nicotine and flavoring.
