Zidovudine (ZDV), also known as azidothymidine (AZT), was the first antiretroviral medication used to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS. It is generally recommended for use in combination with other antiretrovirals. [6] It may be used to prevent mother-to-child spread during birth or after a needlestick injury or other potential exposure. [6]
Lamivudine/zidovudine, sold under the brand name Combivir among others, is a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral medication used to treat HIV/AIDS. [2] It contains two antiretroviral medications, lamivudine and zidovudine. [2] It is used together with other antiretrovirals. [2] It is taken by mouth twice a day. [2] [3]
The FDA concluded that an increase in CD4 cell counts was an indicator of how effective the drug would be against AIDS and HIV infection. Stavudine was the fourth drug to be approved for the treatment of AIDS and HIV infection by the FDA on 27 June 1994. Even after approval, studies were continued to evaluate the clinical benefit of the drug.
Commonly prescribed medications for HIV, such as sulfonamides, anticonvulsants, antibacterials, antifungals, antimycobacterials, and, most notably, antiretrovirals, have an increased incidence of adverse cutaneous drug reactions in HIV-positive individuals, and even greater escalation of incidence in people with advanced disease progression in the form of AIDS.
