The Lentz Hotel was the social center of Mt. Pleasant during the last quarter of the nineteenth century and the first part of the twentieth century. In fact, it was "famous for parties and social events". Much of the Hotel's prosperity came from the town's dual role as a trading and educational center. In 1926, the Lentz family sold the hotel.
Stickney was born on May 31, 1840, in Concord, New Hampshire, to Joseph Pearson Stickney (1796–1877) and Lucretia Gibson Stickney (1809–1840).In 1881, Stickney and his partner, John N. Conyngham, purchased the large Mount Pleasant Hotel, in the White Mountains region of New Hampshire, from lumberman John T. G. Leavitt.
The property was part of General William Hammond Marriott's property. Marriott would later become Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1822. During the Civil War the farm was searched as the potential hiding place of 1st Maryland Infantry, CSA General Bradley Tyler Johnson, who was in the attic at the nearby Mt. Pleasant Farm. [2]
