USS Prairie (AD–15) was a Dixie-class destroyer tender built just before the start of World War II for the U.S. Navy. Her task was to service destroyers in, or near, battle areas and to keep them fit for duty. Prior to U.S. entry into World War II, Prairie cruised between Atlantic ports from Colon, C.Z. to Argentia, Newfoundland.
Two ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Prairie, after the grassland prairie. The first USS Prairie (AD-5) was an auxiliary cruiser purchased in 1898 for the Spanish–American War, and in periodic service until sold in 1923. The second USS Prairie (AD-15) was a destroyer tender in service from 1940 to 1993.
In the summer of 1941, USS Prairie (AD-15) deployed to Argentia to house flag headquarters for the base. On 7 December 1941 the United States entered World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Construction ramped up at US facilities in Newfoundland; for coast defense batteries this was primarily at Argentia.
