Ferries serve communities in Southeast Alaska that have no road access, and the vessels can transport people, freight, and vehicles.

In December of 1967, Matanuska inaugurated direct ferry service between the Lower 48 and Alaska. She completed the route between Seattle and Ketchikan in about 43 hours.
