Kermit is a city in and the county seat of Winkler County, Texas, United States. [8] The population was 6,267 at the 2020 census . [ 9 ] The city was named after Kermit Roosevelt following a visit by his father, President Theodore Roosevelt , to the county.

When the promoters of Kermit townsite offered lots for free, county residents chose Kermit as the county seat. After losing the race with Kermit, Duval faded, and the post office closed in 1910. A post office was established at Joiel from 1908 through 1910 and at Theodore from 1909 until 1912. In 1910, Kermit and Hay Flat gained post offices.
On February 20, 1939, SH 302 was extended to Kermit, but with the route's designation being contingent upon completion of work then being done in Winkler County. [3] Soon after, the state assumed maintenance of the Ector County portion, and the following year in 1940 the state assumed maintenance of the Winkler County part of the route. [ 1 ]
