Rich was the eldest son of Henry Rich, 1st Earl of Holland (1590–1649), by his wife Isabel Cope, who had married in or before 1616. His father was a younger brother of Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick , a Puritan and later the commander of the Parliamentarian navy during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms .
Robert Regier Rich (born 7 March 1941) is professor of medicine, microbiology and medical education, and dean emeritus at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He served as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Immunology from 2003 to 2008, and was elected a Fellow of AAI in 2019.
