Dansville is one of the earliest settlements in Ingham County. Permanent home-seekers located there as early as 1836–40, and the first business establishment was a small store, with a general stock, opened by Samuel Crossman about 1847. The village is just northeast of the junction of M-43 and M-52 with I-96. It is about 5 miles (8.0 km) southeast of Williamston and about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Lansing.
