The NSU Spider is an automobile which was produced by NSU Motorenwerke AG from 1963 to 1967. [1] The Spider was the first Western production car in the world to be powered by a Wankel rotary engine. [2] The water-cooled single rotor engine and standard front disc brakes differentiated the car from other cars of similar type of the period.
The last NSU cars with a conventional four-stroke engine had the air-cooled OHC four-cylinder engine in common. The car was marketed in the U.K. as "NSU TYP 110", and Karobes, a major supplier of car accessories, provided a head rest specially for this car: "A new one which can be fitted without a screw, and may be adjusted forwards and backwards."
Under Stieler von Heydekampf the first Wankel powered car, [14] a small low volume open topped sports car, the NSU Spider, appeared in 1964. [ 15 ] However, it was the appearance in 1967 of the futuristic NSU Ro 80 which caught the attention both of the pundits [ 16 ] and of the business press. [ 17 ]
In 1963, NSU produced the first series-production Wankel engine for a car, the KKM 502 (see Figure 6.). It was used in the NSU Spider sports car, of which about 2,000 were made. Despite its "teething troubles", the KKM 502 was a powerful engine with decent potential, smooth operation, and low noise emissions at high engine speeds.
