William John Owen Rowbotham (14 March 1914 – 12 July 1999) was an English actor and songwriter. He is best known for portraying Compo Simmonite in the Yorkshire -based BBC comedy series Last of the Summer Wine for over a quarter of a century.
Bill Owen died of pancreatic cancer in 1999. According to Truly and Clegg, Compo died from a heart attack after catching the sight of Nora Batty in chorus girl clothes. However, he died with a smile on his face (as claimed by Truly, Clegg and Nora). He was buried alongside his signature wellington boots.
