Flora was founded by Samuel White. White was born September 10, 1831, in Warren County, Ohio. He and his family came to Clay County in 1852. During that time, he purchased 85 acres (34 ha) of land from the State of Illinois.
It includes 37 properties on Pleasant and School Streets, between Main and South Streets, near the center of Hyannis. Pleasant Street was laid out in the 18th century, and School Street was laid out c. 1850, and is distinctive for its cohesive collection of Greek Revival cottages, most of which were owned by mariners active in the coasting ...

The Pearl and Bess Meyer House is a historic house located at 233 E. 2nd St. in Flora, Illinois. The house was built in 1912 for Pearl Meyer, who owned a local dry goods store, and his wife Bess. Frank S. Nichols, the former mayor of Flora and contractor for the city's Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Depot, built the house in the Queen Anne style.
