The city of Douglasville is the county seat of and largest city in Douglas County, Georgia, United States. [4] As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 34,650, up from 30,961 in 2010 [5] and 20,065 in 2000. Douglasville is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of Atlanta and is part of the Atlanta metro area.
Chapel Hill High School is known for strong academic performance. CHHS met AYP for the 2007–2008 school year. [citation needed] In 2005, 72% of the student body passed the science section of the GHSGT (Georgia High School Graduation Test), 96% passed the English section, and 95% passed the math section, compared with statewide averages of 68%, 95%, and 92% percent, respectively.
The first public high school for the county was built in 1880 on the present day site of the National Guard Armory in Douglasville. This schoolhouse was used up for most of the county's high school needs until 1937, when President Roosevelt's New Deal WPA program designated that a new school would be built, named Douglasville High School.
In the 1900s, many new residents came to the town to work and start businesses, and a public school system was established and began operating in 1909. [4] After 1900, the growth of the university resulted in the influx of faculty families, and the residential neighborhoods comprising West Chapel Hill provided dwellings and land to accommodate them.
