1844 – New South Wales transfers Norfolk Island to Van Diemen's Land. 1846 – Northern central and eastern Australia briefly become the independent Colony of North Australia, then are returned to New South Wales. Cape Byron, in the north-east of the state, is Australia's most easterly mainland point.
