Liliʻuokalani was born Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Kamakaʻeha [1] [note 1] on September 2, 1838, to Analea Keohokālole and Caesar Kapaʻakea.She was born in the large grass hut of her maternal grandfather, ʻAikanaka, at the base of Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu on the island of Oʻahu.

John Owen ʻAimoku Dominis (January 9, 1883 – July 7, 1917) was the illegitimate son of John Owen Dominis and Mary Purdy Lamiki ʻAimoku, and the adopted son of Queen Liliʻuokalani of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. He served as a Trustee of Queen Liliʻuokalani's Trust, in which he was named a beneficiary.
This made her an aunt of King Kalākaua and Queen Liliʻuokalani, which makes the Kawānanakoas the closest surviving collateral relatives of the formerly reigning Kalākaua house. The said grandmother descended, besides from the ancient line of chiefs of Kauaʻi, also from the chief of Kaʻū , a great-uncle of King Kamehameha I .
