Remote Bar Coding System (RBCS), also called Remote Video Encoding (RVE) is a method used by the United States Postal Service during mail sorting to encode the address of letter-sized mailpieces that are not decipherable by a Multiline Optical Character Reader (MLOCR).
It uses a dual pass sort technique to sort flats all the way to delivery sequence order. Prior to the deployment of FSS machines, flats were machine sorted to the route level only. Carriers had to manually sort all the flats they were to deliver into proper delivery order before they could embark on their routes.
Tritek developed the first high-speed flats sorter in 1991 and named it the 91-5 Ultrasorter. The United States Postal Service tested the 91-5 under their FMBCS (flat mail barcode sorter) development project as a high speed flats sorter replacement. The Postal Service licensed Tritek's technology which is still in use today.
