The Ford Crown Victoria ("Crown Vic") [2] [3] is a full-size sedan that was marketed and manufactured by Ford.The successor to the Ford LTD Crown Victoria, two generations of the model line were produced from the 1992 until the 2012 model years.
For 1988 and 1990, the LTD Crown Victoria underwent multiple revisions and updates. Following a shortened 1991 model year, the LTD Crown Victoria was replaced by the Ford Crown Victoria for 1992. The redesigned model line (dropping the LTD prefix) underwent extensive body, chassis, and powertrain upgrades, remaining in production through 2011.
From 1992 to 1997, the police car models of the Crown Victoria (both base and LX trims) were officially known as Crown Victoria P71s. In the 1993 model year, the Crown Victoria was given a chrome front grille and a reflector strip between the taillights. Another minor restyle followed suit in 1995, with a new grille and taillights.
While the 1992 Crown Victoria was better received in the marketplace than the new-for-1991 Chevrolet Caprice, its exterior design (inspired by the Ford Taurus) was not as popularly accepted as the Grand Marquis. The Grand Marquis outsold the Crown Victoria in 1994 and 1997, despite the latter's police and fleet sales advantage.
The Country Squire was discontinued as part of the development of the 1992 Ford Crown Victoria and passenger carrying duties were given to the Ford Windstar. The decline in full-size station wagon sales meant the Crown Victoria was exclusively a four-door sedan.
