As David stated this is incorrect. The conductors are not required to match the size of the OCPD. In this case they're only required to be sized large enough to meet the MCA of 28.2 amps. The 45 amp OCPD has no relation to the conductor size when using the nameplate values.

I have noticed lately that some condensers have max overcurrent protection size of 25a. Which I install accordingly instead of the 2pole30. Still running the 10/2. I have read on a few different websites that electricians are sizing their wire according to the nameplate rating "minimum circuit ampacity" 2 - 2 1/2 tons 14amps, 18amps...

Largest wire is 350kcmil. At most, one wire per terminal. Required minimum wire bending space is at least 5". However, one of the main considerations is to not have to bend the 350's into a terminal. :happyyes: Burndy BIBS350-8 is 7.68" in length. Gutter must be at least 8" in mounted height.

This is compliant as the overload in the motor will handle any current overload. The breaker, in this case, is only for protection from ground faults and short circuits, not overloads. That's what stood out to me - I misunderstood the line about 'Normally this is too big to protect the 12 AWG wire, but the wire is protected by the air ...

The n gauge wire resistance R in ohms per kilofeet (Ω/kft) is equal to 0.3048×1000000000 times the wire's resistivity ρ in ohm-meters (Ω·m) divided by 25.4 2 times the cross sectional area A n in square inches (in 2):

The scenario: I ask about the wire size so I know what size lugs to bring to connect the wires to the XF spades. The electrician tells me he has 175 amps, he was going to use 3/0 wire, but he had to use 350 because the length was 275'. I asked him why he was upsizing the conductor because of length alone without a calculation.

    On that example Trane unit, the VA would be 208V X 23.9A = 4,971.2 VA and then multiply that X 125% OR 1.25. 4,971.2 X 1.25 = 6,214VA or 6.2KW. The fuse size would be 23.9 X 125% or 1.25 = 29.875A or rounded off a 30Amp fuse. Minimum size wire for 30A is 10AWG copper or 8AWG aluminum.

Separate conduits (2), then yes, 50% in each*. Parallel in the same conduit, derating per 310.15 (B) (2) will play a roll. (*With non-linear loads 310.15 (B) (2) could still be an issue.) (as an example on your 600 amp main, parallel 350s in separate conduits would be 610 amps, 350s parallel in the same conduit -3 phase-4 wire would be 496 amps)
