Stewart Island (Māori: Rakiura, lit. 'glowing skies', officially Stewart Island / Rakiura, formerly New Leinster) is New Zealand's third-largest island, located 30 kilometres (16 nautical miles) south of the South Island, across Foveaux Strait. It is a roughly triangular island with a land area of 1,746 km 2 (674 sq mi).
The Rakiura Museum was first opened in 1960 in a converted house. It was reopened in December 2020 in a purpose-built $3 million building in December 2020. it contains artifacts and displays including the history of whaling and sealing around Stewart Island, boat building, Maori settlement and natural history of Stewart Island.
