1 January – The "Clean Sri Lanka" national initiative commences under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. [1]16 January – The government announces an agreement with Chinese state oil company Sinopec valued at $3.7 billion to construct a "state-of-the-art oil refinery" with a capacity of 200,000 barrels in Hambantota.
Deloitte claims it did a good job on the project. Deloitte's global CEO defended the firm's work on the Kelon matter. The firm was the auditor for thirty months from 2002 to 2004. It qualified its opinion in 2004 as to company sales, returns, and allowances. The firm resigned from the Kelon account after completing the 2004 audit.
The Tamil language is spoken by native Sri Lankan Tamils and is also spoken by Indian Tamils of Sri Lanka and by most Sri Lankan Moors. Tamil speakers number around 4.8 million (29% of the population), making it the second largest language in Sri Lanka. There are more than 40,000 speakers of the Sri Lankan Malay language.
In 2016 January, the Sri Lankan government announced that Indo-Sri Lankan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between India and Sri Lanka will be finalized. It is assumed that Sri Lankan IT industry's job market will be opened to Indians by this agreement causing unemployment among Sri Lankans. [25] [26] [27]
18 March – Two Sri Lankan greats, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara retired from One international cricket following the team's defeat against South Africa. Jayawardene ended 18 year old career as the fifth highest ODI run scorer of all time. Sangakkara ended 15 year career as second highest ODI scorer of all time. [4]
