The Kingdom of Bahrain is divided into four governorates: the Capital, Northern, Southern and Muharraq.The Central Governorate was abolished in September 2014. Northern Region (Arabic: المنطقة الشمالية Al-Minṭaqat aš-Šamālīyah) was an administrative region of Bahrain in the northern part of the country. Its territory is now in the Northern Governorate .

Muharraq (Arabic: المحرق, romanized: al-Muḥarraq) is Bahrain's third most populous city (after the capital Manama and Riffa) and served as its capital until 1932 when it was replaced by Manama. [2] [3] The population of Muharraq in 2020 was 263,373. The city is located on Muharraq Island.
