Alexander "Sandy" Calder (/ ˈ k ɔː l d ər /; July 22, 1898 – November 11, 1976) was an American sculptor known both for his innovative mobiles (kinetic sculptures powered by motors or air currents) that embrace chance in their aesthetic, his static "stabiles", and his monumental public sculptures. [1]
It is a quarter-scale version (11.50 metres (37 feet 9 inches) high), and was one of the working models used during construction of the actual Statue of Liberty. [6] The statue is a short distance away from theh Eiffel Tower and Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel designed its interior. [5] This model weighs 14 tons. [7] It was inaugurated on 4 July 1889.
