External Short Messaging Entity (ESME) is an external application that connects to a Short Message Service Center (SMSC) to engage in the sending or receiving of SMS messages. The term was coined by Aldiscon. SME is a term used in many cellular circles to describe a network entity (mobile/cell phone) that can send/receive messages.

An SMS center (SMSC) is responsible for handling the SMS operations of a wireless network. When an SMS message is sent from a mobile phone, it will first reach an SMS center. The SMS center then forwards the SMS message towards the destination. The main duty of an SMSC is to route SMS messages and regulate the process.
The VMSC will request the information needed for it to deliver the Short Message to its recipient by sending a Send_Info_for_MT_SMS message to the VLR.
