Opened in 1949, the first shopping mall in Canada is the Norgate shopping centre, a strip mall in Saint-Laurent, Montreal, Quebec. The first enclosed shopping mall was the Park Royal Shopping Centre in West Vancouver, British Columbia, which opened a year later, in 1950.
These stores featured "outback" or farm style decorations, and animatronic displays which could be activated by customers – including singing chickens and dancing fruit. The first Franklins Big Fresh store opened in Leichhardt, and others were opened in Marrickville, Macquarie Centre, Stockland Glendale and Gosford.
