The Journal Times traces its roots to the 1852 foundation of the Racine Weekly Journal, which became a daily in 1856.The Journal was sold during the American Civil War to former state senator and commanding officer of the 22nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (the "Abolition Regiment") William L. The incumbent sheriff of Racine County is Christopher Schmaling. Schmaling has been part of the sheriff's office since 1996. He was first elected in the 2010 midterm election, receiving 63 percent of the vote. [1] Schmaling took office on January 3, 2011, replacing retiring sheriff Robert Carlson, who had served in the position since 2003. [2]
