The first-generation Lamborghini V12 was a sixty degree (60°) V12 petrol engine designed by Lamborghini, [1] [2] and was the first internal combustion engine ever produced by the firm. It entered production in 1963 as a 3.5 litre displacing 3,465 cubic centimetres (211.4 cu in ) fitted on Lamborghini's first car, the Lamborghini 350GT .
The Lamborghini Miura is a sports car produced by Italian automaker Lamborghini between 1966 and 1973. The car was the first high-performance production road car with a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, which has since become the standard for performance-oriented sports cars. [4]
Engine bay of a Countach. The Countach was designed around the existing Lamborghini V12 engine in a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. In contrast to the Miura's transversely mounted engine, the engine in the Countach was longitudinally mounted.
The car went on display in Turin without an engine under its hood; according to lore, Ferruccio Lamborghini had the engine bay filled with bricks so that the car would sit at an appropriate height above the ground, and made sure that the bonnet stayed closed to hide the missing engine. [3] [6] The motoring press gave the 350GTV a warm response. [2]
Ferruccio Lamborghini was dissatisfied with several design features of the 350 GTV, [5] and with the state of tune of the engine. [6] [8] He commissioned Carrozzeria Touring to redesign the car to be more practical [5] and had the engine detuned to 270 bhp (201 kW; 274 PS) at 6,500 rpm for use in the production car.
The engine could only have a power output of 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp) and the car must be rear-wheel-drive. The power was limited by air restrictions placed in the engine bay. The gearbox is a sequential 6-Speed twin-clutch setup.
The car still inherits the modern Lamborghini design, with the Y-shaped design elements such as the headlights and taillights, along with the triangular front trunk and rear engine bay. [4] Carbon fiber is used entirely for the body panels. The body of the car is monitored by a health system. [6] Entry by passengers is via a sliding canopy. [8]
