Cleveland County Schools is a PK–12 graded school district serving Cleveland County, North Carolina. The system was formed from the merger of Kings Mountain City Schools, Shelby City Schools and the former Cleveland County Schools system in 2004. Its 29 schools serve 16,417 students as of the 2010–2011 school year.

In 1905, Kings Mountain Graded School was founded. Known as Central School, all grade levels (1–11) were in one building, which was not fully completed for five years. Shelby High School was first mentioned in local newspapers of the time as being established in June 1877, by Professor J.A. Smith, with G.W. Sharpe and Miss Laura Sharp as instructors.
