Harmony, also known as Node 2, is the "utility hub" of the International Space Station. It connects the laboratory modules of the United States , Europe and Japan , as well as providing electrical power and electronic data.
Tranquility, also known as Node 3, [1] is a module of the International Space Station (ISS). It contains environmental control systems, life support systems , a toilet, exercise equipment, and an observation cupola .
The ISS is made up of 16 pressurized modules: six Russian modules (Zarya, Zvezda, Poisk, Rassvet, Nauka, and Prichal), eight US modules (BEAM, [9] Leonardo, Harmony, Quest, Tranquility, Unity, Cupola, and Destiny), one Japanese module and one European module . At least one Russian pressurized module is deorbited till now. [10]
Measuring 4.57 metres (15.0 ft) in diameter and 5.47 metres (17.9 ft) in length, Unity was constructed of steel by Boeing for NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. It was the first of three connecting nodes – Unity, Harmony, and Tranquility – that forms the structural backbone of the U.S. segment of the ISS. [102]
Unity has two axial and four radial Common Berthing Mechanism (CBM) ports. In addition to connecting to the Zarya module, Unity connects to the U.S. Destiny Laboratory Module (added on STS-98), the Z1 truss (an early exterior framework for the station added on STS-92), the PMA-3 (also added on STS-92), and the Quest Joint Airlock (added on STS-104).
PMA-3 was robotically removed from Tranquility on March 26, 2017, and again attached to the zenith berth of Harmony after being prepared during a successful spacewalk on March 24, 2017. A second spacewalk was conducted on March 30, 2017, to finalize the PMA-3 cable connections on Harmony. PMA-3 received International Docking Adapter-3 in August ...
