The Great Fire of Rome (Latin: incendium magnum Romae) began on the 19th of July 64 AD. [1] The fire started in the merchant shops around Rome's chariot stadium, Circus Maximus . After six days, the fire was brought under control, but before the damage could be assessed, the fire reignited and burned for another three days.
The painting was first exhibited in 1876 at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. It went on to tour Europe with stops in Vienna, Munich, Prague, Lviv, Berlin, Saint Petersburg, Poznań, Paris and London. It was met with critical acclaim by masters of academic art such as Hans Makart and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. [3]
The Fire in the Borgo is a painting created by the workshop of the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael between 1514 and 1517. [1] Though it is assumed that Raphael did make the designs for the complex composition, the fresco was most likely painted by his assistant Giulio Romano .
The painting depicts the meeting between the Pope Leo I and Attila the Hun, which took place in 452 in northern Italy. [1] Initially, Raphael depicted Leo I with the face of Pope Julius II but after Julius' death, [1] Raphael changed the painting to resemble the new pope, Leo X. [2] Leo X appears both as cardinal and as pope.
Between 1753 and 1757, Count Étienne François de Choiseul, Louis XV's ambassador to Rome in the 1740s, commissioned four paintings from Pannini: the Galleries of Views of Ancient Rome [7] and Modern Rome, [8] a view of the Place Saint-Peter and an Interior of St. Peter's Basilica. [9] These paintings were made between 1754 and 1757.
Giulio Pippi was born in Rome and he began his career there as a young assistant to the leading painter and architect Raphael. He became an important member of Raphael's large team working on the frescos in the Raphael Rooms and Vatican loggias using designs by Raphael and, later painting a group of figures in the Fire in the Borgo fresco.
