Lynyrd Skynyrd (/ l ɛ n ər d ˈ s k ɪ n ər d /, LEN-ərd SKIN-ərd) [2] is an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964. The group originally formed as My Backyard and comprised Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass), and Bob Burns (drums).
Lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and lead guitarist Steve Gaines died in a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi, and Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 is the first album to feature their replacements, lead vocalist Johnny Van Zant (Ronnie's younger brother) and guitarist Randall Hall.
A number of surviving members reunited for the tour. Original members Gary Rossington, Billy Powell and Leon Wilkeson were joined by Ed King (original member who had left the band in 1975), Artimus Pyle (drummer at the time of the plane crash), Randall Hall and Johnny Van Zant.
The six members included two Skynyrd bandmates – keyboardist Billy Powell and bassist Leon Wilkeson – along with lead singer Jimmy Dougherty, drummer Derek Hess, and guitarists Barry Lee Harwood and Randall Hall. In 1984, Collins tried to resurrect the band, hiring Jacksonville guitarist Mike Owings and bassist Andy Ward King.

Keyboardist Billy Powell and bassist Leon Wilkeson worked with Christian-rock band Vision for several years before re-joining a re-formed Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1987. Guitarist Randall Hall, at Collins' insistence, also joined the reconstituted Skynyrd (Collins was at this point paralyzed from an auto accident).
