There is a way to break up a table (a too-wide table for example) into more tables without losing all the background colors, and other inline styling. Copy the table to 2 sandboxes (or one sandbox, and in the article itself). Then delete the columns not needed on one of the new tables.
For example, the background colors of cells can be changed with cell parameters, making the table into a diagram, like meta:Template talk:Square 8x8 pentomino example. An "image" in the form of a table is much more convenient to edit than an uploaded image. If all the cells in a row are empty the cells still show up.
The easiest way to insert a new table is to use the editing toolbar that appears when you edit a page (see image above). Often a list is best left as a list. Before reformatting a list into table form, consider whether the information will be more clearly conveyed by virtue of having rows and columns. If so, then a table is probably a good choice. If there is no obvious benefit to having rows and columns, then a table is probably not the best choice.
