Merthyr Tydfil was an ancient parish within the county of Glamorgan. As well as the village of Merthyr Tydfil itself, the parish covered much of the upper Taff Valley, including settlements stretching from Dowlais in the north to Aberfan and Treharris in the south. [17] It was governed by its parish vestry, in the same way as most rural parishes.
From 1974 until 1996, Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council was a lower-tier district council, with Mid Glamorgan County Council providing county-level services in the area. Since the abolition of Mid Glamorgan County Council in 1996, Merthyr Tydfil has again been a county borough. [4] [5]
It is a partnership between the ten local authorities of Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Torfaen, and the Vale of Glamorgan, local businesses in southeast Wales and other organisations.
Merthyr Tydfil is home to the principal UK call centre for German mobile telephone company, T-Mobile. Many jobs are also provided in small-scale and family businesses. [24] One site of note on the M4 corridor is Port Talbot Steelworks – the largest steel producer in the UK and one of the biggest in Europe. [25]
The parish of Merthyr Tydfil was made a local board district in 1850, which became an urban district in 1894. [57] The urban district was made a municipal borough in 1905, with eight electoral wards. Merthyr Tydfil was granted county borough status in 1908, making it independent from Glamorgan County Council. [58]
