Wellington Land District is a land district (cadastral division) of Western Australia, located within the South-West Land Division on the state's west coast. It spans roughly 32°56'S – 33°40'S in latitude and 115°25'E – 116°50'E in longitude.
The Wellington City Council District Plan identifies Newtown as a suburb with an "identifiable or distinct character". [4] On 16 May 2023, a fire broke out at the 92-bed Loafers Lodge in Newtown. Opened around 1860 by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), Douglas Mine, in today's downtown Nanaimo, was the first coalmine in the region. While fishing about 8 kilometres (5 mi) northwest at Diver Lake in 1869, former HBC employee Robert Dunsmuir observed evidence of coal deposits, in what he would call the Wellington seam.
