The peninsula was cut through by Hurricane Michael October 10, 2018 leaving the northern part of St. Joseph Peninsula State Park on an island. The breach partially filled in naturally by March 2019. The state has also brought in sand to restore dunes. As of 2020, the state plans to rebuild the access road to the northern part of the park. [7] [8]
In the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, large swaths of the vacation rentals on the peninsula were heavily damaged. A new inlet was cut where the road was washed out inside St. Joseph Peninsula State Park; other portions of the road, especially at its southern end near the Cape itself, were heavily damaged.
