State Route 20 (SR 20), also known as the North Cascades Highway, is a state highway that traverses the U.S. state of Washington.It is the state's longest highway, traveling 436 miles (702 km) across the northern areas of Washington, from U.S. Route 101 (US 101) at Discovery Bay on the Olympic Peninsula to US 2 near the Idaho state border in Newport.
The mission was built near the HBC's Fort Colville, on the bluff then overlooking Kettle Falls on the Columbia River. Fort Spokane was a U.S. Army frontier outpost in Lincoln County, Washington. Located at the confluence of the Columbia and Spokane rivers, it separated the Colville and Spokane tribes from Spokane. The fort was closed in 1929. [7]
The state of Washington began maintaining sections of what would become US 2 with the extension of State Road 7 in 1909, from Peshastin to Spokane on the Sunset Highway and later State Road 2. In addition to State Road 2, State Road 23 was created in 1915, traveling north from Spokane to Newport, and was renumbered to State Road 6 in 1923.
Washington renumbered its highways in 1964 to correspond to a new sign route, later state route, system. PSH 22 became SR 25 and SSH 22A became SR 251 , an auxiliary route of SR 25. [ 2 ] [ 27 ] [ 28 ] SR 251 was later removed from the state highway system in 1983.
