Joliet Gateway Center is the terminus of the Metra Rock Island District and Heritage Corridor lines, to Chicago LaSalle Street Station and Chicago Union Station respectively. It is an intermediate stop on the Amtrak Texas Eagle from Chicago Union to San Antonio and Los Angeles , and on the Lincoln Service from Chicago to St. Louis and Kansas City .
U.S. Route 30 runs along the southern edge of the CDP, leading west 2 miles (3 km) to the center of Joliet and east 3 miles (5 km) to Interstate 80. Ridgewood was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. Pace provides bus service on Route 508 connecting Ridgewood to downtown Joliet and other destinations. [3]
The Aurora, Plainfield and Joliet Railroad left Aurora on the Parker Avenue line and ran 22 miles (35 km) southeast through Plainfield to Joliet. Eight passenger cars operated 17 trains each way in a day, and 3 streetcars provided local service in Joliet. First opened in 1903, it was converted to 5 Pierce-Arrow buses in 1924. [22]
In 1673, Louis Jolliet, along with Father Jacques Marquette, paddled up the Des Plaines River and camped on a huge earthwork mound, a few miles south of present-day Joliet. [6] Maps from Jolliet's exploration of the area showed a large hill or mound down river from Chicago, labeled Mont Joliet. [7] The mound has since been flattened due to mining.
