Bernice Cross (1912–1996) was an American artist and art instructor born in Iowa City, Iowa, who was based in Washington, D.C. for most of her professional career. [1] [2] Known for her originality, creative imagination, sense of humor, and love of fantasy, she painted with a deceptive simplicity and handled color and form with subtlety and a sure touch.
The work is especially notable for the fact that Christ is completely naked. The nudity of the figure is true to the Gospels. They assert that the removal of Christ's clothing by the Roman soldiers is the fulfilment of an Old Testament prophecy in Psalm 22:18, "They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture."
Giotto's Crucifix at Santa Maria Novella is a cross painted in tempera and gold on wood panel (578 x 406 cm) by Giotto di Bondone around 1290-1295. The crucifix is preserved in the center of the nave of Florence's Santa Maria Novella basilica.
