Bönigen is a village and municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the Swiss canton of Bern. It lies on the shore of Lake Brienz, near to the mouth of the river Lütschine, and adjacent to the resort town of Interlaken. Bönigen belongs to the Small Agglomeration Interlaken with 23,300 inhabitants (2014). [3]
A village grew up around the monastery, along with a mill (which gave the municipality its name until 1891). On the right bank of the river, Interlaken village developed. In 1279/80 the village of Unterseen developed near Interlaken village. Also near the village were the imperial castle of Weissenau and the market town of Widen.
Hotel Interlaken is one of the oldest hotels in Switzerland. It opened in 1323 and was originally used as a guest house of the cloister and later it was part of the administration of the region. [1] The old court room on the first floor of the Hotel is now used as a meeting room. [2]

Interlaken-Oberhasli District in the Canton of Bern was created on 1 January 2010, uniting the former Interlaken and Oberhasli districts. [1] It is part of the Oberland administrative region. It contains 28 municipalities with an area of 1,228.93 km 2 (474.49 sq mi) and a population (as of December 2008 [update] ) of 48,763.
