The U.S. state of West Virginia has 55 counties. Fifty of them existed at the time of the Wheeling Convention in 1861, during the American Civil War, when those counties seceded from the Commonwealth of Virginia to form the new state of West Virginia. US 30 in West Virginia starts off at the corner of the Ohio River, where it immediately runs into Chester. After about 0.4 miles (0.64 km), the highway has an interchange with WV 2. The freeway portion that was carried over from Ohio ends shortly after. After an intersection with WV 8, US 30 continues into Pennsylvania.
